The nonprofit arts organization Sacramento Valley Spark (SVS) invites the greater Sacramento region to explore SVS Art Stops along Sacramento Regional Transit District’s (SacRT) Gold Line. Art Stops — in place from Aug. 14 to 21 — will feature temporary upcycled art installations from local artists and a rotating array of “pop-up” artistic activations.

“The idea is to give people an exciting reason to safely re-engage in community using mass transit while giving multiple artists a chance to share their art,” said Ed Fletcher, president of Sacramento Valley Spark.

The Art Stops will debut two new artworks created through SVS’s Upcycle Art Challenge. The contest invited artists to create a statement about “sustainability” using recycled materials. The artists selected and awarded honorariums are local artists Danial Tran and Melissa Uroff Millner.

Artist honorarium and overall Art Stops program is supported in part by the Measure H Community Enhancement Fund from the City of Rancho Cordova.

“Rancho Cordova is proud to support ways to encourage our community to safely reopen while also supporting our local artists,” said Rancho Cordova Mayor Garrett Gatewood.

In addition to the placed art, pop-up activations will add music, energy, and art to spaces that are primarily way stations for travelers.

“SacRT has long supported public art,” said Henry Li, SacRT General Manager/CEO. “We’re proud to invite people to re-explore our stations through this innovative program as we are continually looking for ways to improve the customer experience while contributing to the beautification of Sacramento.”

SVS is a 501c3 nonprofit inspired by the 10 principles of Burning Man. In recent months, SVS’s Summer and Spring Spark Drive-Thru brought joy to the thousands of attendees and provided a safe artistic expression during the pandemic.

“We know the pandemic is not over. So we’re doing our part to encourage adaptations to our rapidly changing environment,” said Fletcher. “We’re encouraging people to get vaccinated and to wear masks where appropriate, which includes while riding transit.”
