‘Spark the Dark’ caps busy year for SVS

The sold-out New Year’s Eve celebration “Spark the Dark” capped a busy 2019 for Sacramento Valley Spark.
Spark the Dark: Everything Changes at Midnight featured a blacklight gallery with several different types of UV-reactive art, a dance floor featuring live bands and DJs and an outdoor area loaded with artistic play spaces.
“It hit all the notes we wanted,” said Ed Fletcher, SVS president. “We wanted an event that drew new people in, but also captured that burner spirit.”
The private event was held at Sacramento Art Glass, 204 23rd Street and was lead by Benjamen Bradley, who was recently named to the M5Arts board of directors and also led SVS’s 2019 “Summer Spark” event.
“I love the energy we created,” said Bradley. “It was great to see so many new and happy faces.”
Bradley was also pleased with the more than $6,000 paid to artists creating and placing art at the event.
Five burn barrels created a cozy outdoor space for people to explore engaging spaces including Purrrgoda, a feline-themed climbing tower that emphasizes conversations about consent.

The Spark the Dark employed the name of the created for the rained out 2016 SVS decompression.
STD was the third major event for Sacramento Valley Spark in 2019. The organization hosted Playa Academy Maker Campout in May and Summer Spark in August. SVS also participated in several Upcycle Pop sustainable markets.
In 2020, the organization aims to keep the momentum going — continuing Playa Academy (May 1-3) and Summer Spark (July 25) — while adding MOOP Your City trash collection challenge and the one-year art installation Sacramento Art Park to the agenda.
