Simple Solar w/ Mosey

This is a demonstration. The attendees will be provided with instruction on the concepts, materials and building instructions for creating a simple solar powered battery bank for camping and off grid use. JC will bring a simple solar power set-up to demonstrate how to adapt solar power for multiple uses.Get off the grid, but don’t lose your luxuries. Create simple solar setup scalable to any use. Saturday 12:30 – 2:30 pm and Saturday 5 :30- 7:30 pm
Bring your cup for solar powered blender libations.

Going Green While Getting Dusty


Did you know that the Burningman org has goals to sustainably manage waste, be ecologically regenerative, and be carbon negative by 2030?

Come learn how you can contribute and make your camp more sustainable. We will begin by focusing on small and easy changes that require little to no cost and then discuss larger changes and resources that exist within BRC and the Sacramento area. Friday 7 – 9 pm


Purple’s Wig Workshop

Make a fashion statement while protecting your hair from sun and harsh playa dust. Fun wigs made of yarn and your imagination. Use up all my yarn, PLEASE! Tools provided for your use at Playa Academy, and you get to go home with a wig you’ve made yourself! I’ll also have pre-made wigs available for purchase.

Playa kitchen hacks

Join Debby Lee (AKA Red Vixen) and Judith Punch at their demo playa camp kitchen. See proven camp kitchen gear and gadgets used on the playa. Learn and share kitchen hacks for lazy burners to avoid excessive time prep, cook and clean-up. During the afternoon session, Judith will also share a couple playa recipes and lead six lucky participants in preparing the recipes for Saturday Night’s potluck. Saturday 9 – 11 am and Saturday 3 – 5 pm


Sewing Attractive Shade Coverings w/Sachi Ivy

Shade areas are an important component of any camp, but how can we make it look attractive? Learn tips and tricks for creating inexpensive, lightweight, easy-to-hang shade covers using basic materials and a little bit of sewing know-how. This workshop is free; you will receive a list of suggested materials and basic instructions for best practices, see some examples, and get ideas for creating a comfortable and colorful shade space! Saturday 12:30 – 2:30 pm


Fire Photography w/Matthew Heintz

Learn how to capture fire with Photography.
This class will cover the following: Exposure lengths. Effects and use of flashes. Situational awareness and safety. Friday 7 – 9 pm and Saturday 5 :30- 7:30 pm
Requirements: Camera with flash.


Fire Safety and Performance Demonstration w/Steven Nicol

Trouble is an artist experienced in many crafts, and fire spinning is one of the ones he’s best known for. He will speak about fire safety and demonstrate his amazing skills for us. Friday 7 – 9 pm


Chill Dome Construction

In just two hours magically turn a bunch of plumbing and hardware supplies from the hardware store into a desert dome worthy of any activity. Dome diameter 10’. Ceiling at center 9.5’. At Playa Academy we will cut and drill and glue and screw and end up with one Chill Dome. We will be selling raffle tickets for the Playa Academy chill dome through the weekend. Lucky winner takes her home. The raffled dome will include the dome itself, all connectors, and a colorful fireproof parachute cover. You supply the interior furnishings. Friday 7 – 9 pm

Make a flag w/ Ruth Talisman

I have sewn cloth banners ready for you to make a flag or family crest. Use all the colors of the rainbow. There are hundreds of foam stamps to choose from. Create a personal work of art.
It’s FREE and fun for all ages. Saturday 9 – 11 am and Saturday 12:30 – 2:30 pm


What to bring and not to bring to Burning Man:

With over twenty years of playa experience and desert camping, we will explain what works and what does not work at Burning Man! This class will help the beginner burners gain knowledge and insight into what to bring or not to bring to Burning Man. Climate, safety, comfort, volunteering… From the Ten Principles to getting married on Playa, Bad Fred and Topless Deb will have answers for questions you didn’t even know you had. Saturday 9 – 11 am


Glow bike stick w/ Jon Fadhl

Dark wad sword, LED or EL Wire to make a 6′ glow stick for your bike or person.

Be visible at night on Playa! Friday 7 – 9 pm


Thirsty on the playa w/Dennis Domondon

The yin and yang of sodium and potassium. Sodium and potassium go together like yin and yang. Sodium is in everything and we don’t need all that sodium that is preached on the playa. We only need some sodium and some potassium to help balance out our system. A healthy mix of both is encouraged but more so potassium as many lack reaching their daily potassium requirements. Saturday 12:30 – 2:30 pm and Sunday 8 – 10 am

  • eating right
  • balancing your sodium/potassium levels and
  • hydrate while on the playa.

Introduction to Plasma Cutting w/Comet

Learn my method of transferring designs onto metal and take home a handmade treasure!

These classes will be in 40 minute segments. Come find Comet and check-in at the beginning of the session to get your timeslot for that class. Saturday 9 – 11 am and Saturday 12:30 – 2:30 pm
**this class has very limited spots, registrants will be wait listed as needed.


Tether your shitz- Using the Playa Screw.


Replace that rebar! Learn the best way to use the playa screw – using a cordless drill or impact driver and a couple of chain links. It’s transforming! A demonstration of one of the best light weight Playa dirt screws.

Handouts will be provided to direct you to buying your own screws and anchoring chain links.
Attendees can purchase playa screws and chain links on-site. Bring cash to purchase.
Saturday 9 – 11 am and Sunday 8 – 10 am

Playa Burner Monkey Hut


OD Green will set up Saturday morning, tear down Sunday morning. This is the standard monkey hut used on Playa at the Burning Man, and will be raffled off to a lucky winner with proceeds benefiting the non-profit organization Sacramento Valley Spark (SVS), so be prepared to take it home with you! Saturday 9 – 11 am and Sunday 8 – 10 am
There will be a materials list and instructions available.


Basic Bike Maintenance

A demo on how to prep your bike before the burn, how to do some basic repairs on the playa, and what to do when you get home. Giving instructions to help people troubleshoot bike issues, and give my recommendations for the tools one should have at the burn.
We will Q & A with whatever time we have left! Saturday 9 – 11 am


Tod Tbone Johnson’s Playa Pendant Workshop and The Museum of Playa Artifacts

Playa Academy 2022 T-Bone has been making Playa Pendants for years. Check out Playa Artifacts Museum displays and make a surprise, special Playa Academy Pendant. Saturday 9 – 11 am // Saturday 12:30 – 2:30 pm // Saturday 3 – 5 pm // Saturday 5 :30- 7:30 pm

Bring old or current BMan swag to enter a special raffle for awesome prizes and add your name to the Museum registry.

Tie Dye w/ Sonia Eliseo


Beginner tie dye technique.
We will supply a shirt for each student to dye. Feel free to bring additional items to dye, fabric should be 100% natural (100% cotton, linen, wool, NO POLY or POLY BLENDS).

LadyBee “Jewelry of Burning Man”

An informal chat about our book and my 25 year collection; show and tell, Q & A Christine Kristen (a.k.a LadyBee) is Burning Man’s Archivist, Art Collection Manager and Photo Gallery editor. She was Burning Man’s art curator from 1999 to 2008, where she dealt with all things visual and aesthetic, including managing the art and the art grant program, photo-editing the Image Gallery, writing art content for the Burning Man website, working with the ARTery, managing the archives, and lecturing and writing about the art of Burning Man. She is the co-author of “The Jewelry of Burning Man”, with Karen Christians and George Post, and the curator of the exhibition “PlayaMade: Jewelry of Burning Man”, which debuted at the Fuller Craft Museum near Boston in 2017 and then went to the Bellevue Arts Museum in Seattle in January 2020. She has an MFA in sculpture from the Art Institute of Chicago. Saturday 3 – 5 pm


Feral Hollowell “Make a Scape”


A Scape is just what you need to protect you from wind, sun, and cold on the high desert.

In this class you will make your own Scape with materials provided. Saturday 5 :30- 7:30 pm


Intro Flow Hoop w/ Matches

Learn the art of flow! This class will take you through the basics and help you gain confidence in your own flow technique. You will learn the beginning positions, refine your planes, and take you through several movements to give you the perfect foundation for spinning on your own. (Touches on some intermediate Flow) Saturday 12:30 – 2:30 pm
Bring your own hoop if possible.


Build a Water Cannon w/ Tim Eliseo


In this class, you’ll build a sturdy and powerful handheld water cannon from PVC water pipe and fittings (this ain’t no “Super Soaker”), perfect for pool, lake, and river play. Or for sucking water out of coolers on playa and shooting into the air to keep the dust down.

After brief instruction, you will use various stations to measure and cut pipe, cut an O-ring channel, cement parts together, decorate, and lube your creation. After class, you can test at the local lake. Friday 7 – 9 pm and Sunday 8 – 10 am


Intro to Poi w/VooPú

In this class, you’ll learn the beginning positions and movements in poi. From planes to transitions to tricks, you’ll leave this lesson with the ability to flow through the basics and start your love of spinning!Bring your own poi. Saturday 3 – 5 pm and Saturday 5 :30- 7:30 pm


Hoop-making demo w/Nancy Fleischauer

Want to learn how to make your own hula hoop(s)? Have questions about size, weight, materials needed? If so, this is the workshop for you! We’ll be discussing materials needed, where to get them, how to figure out what size hoop you need for your current skill level, how to put them together and how to tape them, as well as having lots of different sizes and types of hoops so you can try them out and determine the right size for you.
