On the playa, Burners work together to Leave No Trace. In the default world… well, we’ve got some work to do.
Moop Your City (MYC) is a recurring community cleanup project from Sacramento Valley Spark that invites volunteers to bring the Leave No Trace ethic off the playa and into our shared public spaces. Since 2018, MYC events have gathered neighbors, artists, and civic-minded mischief-makers to pick up litter, connect with one another, and care for the places we live.
Moop Your City began with a small grant from Burners Without Borders and has since grown into a regularly featured community action in Sacramento. What started as a simple cleanup has become something more playful and more powerful: a reminder that caring for our city can be collective, creative, and even fun.
Our events pop up throughout the year, often returning to familiar spaces, where we invite people to play as we clean and turn stewardship into a shared experience.
What does “MOOP” mean?
MOOP stands for Matter Out Of Place.
It’s a term used in the Burning Man community for anything that doesn’t belong in the environment, trash, debris, or even small items like bottle caps or cigarette butts.
The idea is simple: if something wasn’t there before you arrived, it shouldn’t be there when you leave.
Moop Your City takes that same mindset and applies it to our everyday public spaces, parks, streets, and neighborhoods, turning cleanup into a shared act of care for the places we all use.
